What do I need to know about you?

by Gillian Larson

That is what Eric Karlan wants to know, especially when he is working with high school students on their college essays and applications.

Eric elaborates in his TEDx Temecula Talk on the importance of asking and answering that question not just for teenagers, but in all phases of life. It is clear from his own story that knowing some of your answers to "What do I need to know about you" leads to being a "better person" in life.

Eric was one of the amazing speakers on the TEDx Temecula Stage in September 2018 with his excellent message "  "It is really amazing when these young men and women start to realize the synergies in their lives and accomplishments, understanding the roots of their passions and how to think about their goals," says Eric.

In 2010, Eric co-founded a college prep company that works with students on SAT and ACT test prep, in addition to coaching them on college essays and applications.

Eric and his team have worked with thousands of students in over 30 states and almost 20 countries. His favorite part of his job is helping students identify their stories ("What do I need to know about you?") and teaching them how to share their stories in their essays.

He graduated in 2009 from the University of Pennsylvania with an individualized degree in Journalism, History, and Culture. Throughout college, he published pieces on a variety of topics that were all personally meaningful to him, including sports, the Holocaust, wildlife, and Lyme Disease.

Before Eric was helping other people to identify and share their stories through the written word, he was writing stories himself. After reading Lois Lowry's Number The Stars, Eric was inspired to have his Bar Mitzvah in Denmark, retracing the rescue route used during the Holocaust to save all the Danish Jews; when he got home, he wrote the story of his Bar Mitzvah journey, which was later read into the Congressional Record by the late Congressman Tom Lantos.

As per Wikipedia

Number the Stars (1989) is a work of historical fiction by American author Lois Lowry, about the escape of a Jewish family (the Rosens) from Copenhagen, Denmark , during World War II. The story centers on ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen, who lives with her family in Copenhagen in 1943. She becomes a part of the events related to the rescue of the Danish Jews,

Testimonials as to how Eric and his company has helped can be found on his site, attesting to what impact he has.http://myivyexperience.com/testimonials/

"Preparing for college standard admission tests and applications should not be a one size fits all program. Ivy Experience provided a flexible approach in preparing my daughter for all the myriad of tasks and points to be considered and addressed. Ivy Experience tailored their services to what my daughter needed and how she responded best."

I personally love that he says:

"The importance of asking and answering that question, "What do I need to know about you" is not just for teenagers, but in all phases of life. It is clear from his own story that knowing some of your answers to "What do I need to know about you" leads to being a "better person" in life. In addition he clearly states that everyone has their own path to follow and one must find their passion and follow that.
